Japan's Meteorological Agency says Mount Asama in central Japan likely had a very small eruption on Tuesday morning.
The agency has maintained the alert level for the volcano on the border of Gunma and Nagano prefectures at 2 on the scale of 5.
It is cautioning people to keep out of a 2-kilometer area around the mountain's crater at the summit. It is also warning of possible falling rocks in case of an eruption.
Agency officials say staff at a facility about 4 kilometers north of Mt. Asama observed a small amount of volcanic ash falling at around 9:30 AM on Tuesday.
The officials say heavy cloud cover around the volcano is blocking them from confirming whether smoke is spewing from the crater.
Mt. Asama last erupted in May 2009.
