South Korea Box Office: 'Mad Max' on Top for Third Week
Mad Max: Fury Road dominated the South Korean box office for a third consecutive week, grabbing 31 percent of the market share for the May 29-31 weekend.
According to the Korean Film Council's KOBIS database,
the Warner Brothers Korea film has earned a cumulative $23.4 million as
of Tuesday. In terms of admissions, the metric that Korean observers use
to measure a film's performance, the actioner crossed 3 million
admissions on Monday. This makes Mad Max the seventh most successful film of the year so far in the country terms of both revenue and admissions.
According to Warner Brothers Korea, screenings of the
film in Imax, 3D and 4D have helped add to sales, particularly since
many fans have re-watched the George Miller film in various formats.
Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law and Jason Statham,
remained in second place for the second week, accounting for 23.3
percent of weekend sales. The film, distributed by 20th Century Fox
Korea, has so far earned a total of $11.5 million.
The Shameless,
which premiered last month in Cannes' Un Certain Regard section,
debuted in third place. The local film, handled by CGV Arthouse, took
9.1 percent of the weekend revenue for a gross of $2.08 million.
Jeon Do-yeon, who won a best actress honor in Cannes in 2007 for Secret Sunshine, takes the lead in the noir romance produced by Oldboy director Park Chan-wook. She plays a femme fatale who captures the heart of a homicide detective (Kim Nam-gil) who initially approaches her to arrest her mobster boyfriend.
In fourth place was another homegrown film, The Chronicles of Evil,
which accounted for 8.8 percent of the share during this period. In
terms of admissions, however, it remained in third place for the second
week. The homespun crime thriller is handled by CJ Entertainment, and
its gross total comes down to $14.64 million.
Last but not least, in fifth place was Tomorrowland, which jumped 27 spots from the previous week. The adventure film starring George Clooney trailed close behind The Chronicles of Evil with 8.5 percent of ticket sales in South Korea. Distributed by Walt Disney Company Korea, Tomorrowland's gross total in the country now comes to $1.61 million
