Shinjuku Swan, a relatively mainstream film for prolific Japanese auteur Shion Sono, bowed at number one at the Japanese box office with $2.1 million (￥252 million) from 320 screens on Saturday and Sunday, knocking Cinderella off the top spot after five weekends.
Following the popular route from manga to TV series to the big screen, Shinjuku Swan,
released by Sony Pictures, looks set to give festival favorite Sono his
biggest commercial success to date. By comparison, last year's Tokyo Tribe made $1.35 million in its entire domestic run.
Shinjuku Swan deals with happenings in the Kabukicho entertainment and red light district of central Tokyo and stars Go Ayano, Yusuke Iseya and Erika Sawjiri. The Ken Wakui manga was made into a TV Asahi drama in 2007.
Meanwhile, Cinderella has now taken $42 million (￥49.6 billion) after six weekends in Japanese theaters.
The Maze Runner
dropped one spot to fifth after its solid start last weekend, pulled in
another $920,000 from 345 screens, and has now taken $3.6 million in
Japan.
The latest installments of local kids' anime franchises Crayon Shin-chan and Detective Conan fell to seventh and eighth, respectively, both in their seventh weekend of release. Crayon Shin-chan has a cumulative of $17.5 million (￥2.1 billion) and Detective Conan has racked up $36 million (￥4.27 billion).
Neill Blomkamp's Chappie propped up the top 10 for Sony after its underwhelming debut last weekend in eighth spot.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 will finally open in Japan on Friday, while Disney will be hoping it can recoup some more of Tomorrowland's budget when it opens Saturday, following the studio's strong recent run at the Japanese box office.
