A double dose of comedy and the third outing of the Insidious franchise take on ruling champ San Andreas at the North American box office this weekend in what's expected to be a crowded race.
Entourage, the big-screen adaptation of the hit HBO comedy series that ended four years ago, opens everywhere Wednesday in order to get a jump on Spy, the action-comedy directed by Paul Feig and starring Melissa McCarthy, Jason Statham, Rose Byrne and Jude Law.
From Warner Bros. and HBO Films, Entourage hopes to clear $20 million for the five days, but if there's enough interest among males, the film could outperform tracking. Series stars Adrian Grenier, Kevin Connolly, Jeremy Piven, Jerry Ferrara and Kevin Dillon reteamed with showrunnerDoug Ellin to make the $30 million movie, which picks up where the HBO show left off. This time out, star Vincent Chase (Grenier) is in the midst of making his directorial debut for former agent Ari (Piven), now a studio head.
Critics have been none too kind to Entourage. The opposite can be said of Spy, which sports stellar reviews and should open in the low- to mid-$30 million range, thanks to ardent female fans. Fox is hopeful the $65 million comedy will appeal to males as well, thanks to the action element. Marking the third time that Feig has directed McCarthy, the movie spoofs classic spy films.
Chernin Entertainment is a producer on Spy, which has already earned nearly $30 million overseas in the Asia-Pacific region, where it opened two weeks ago.
The weekend's third new offering is Blumhouse Productions' Insidious: Chapter 3, which could open in the $25 million range for Focus Features' Gramercy Pictures label. The prequel marks the directorial debut of Insidious screenwriter Leigh Whannell and stars Dermot Mulroney,Stefanie Scott, Angus Sampson, Whannell and Lin Shaye.
In September 2013, Insidious: Chapter 2 opened to $40.2 million.
All three films will have to battle holdover San Andreas. Starring Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, the earthquake disaster film opened to a better-than-expected $54.6 million last weekend and could earn as much as $27 million in its second outin
